Education

Community Engagement:

Public Events:

Our education team works hard to educate people of all ages on birds, the environment, and conservation. We attend local events, such as: St. Joseph County Public Library’s Annual Science Alive, Elkhart Conservation Center’s Annual Envirofest, and the City of Middlebury’s Annual Riverfest. If you are interested in the South Bend Elkhart Audubon Society being a part of your upcoming event, please contact us.

In the classroom:

We also attend school classrooms, library programs, after school events, and more. If you are interested in a presentation by our education team, please contact us.

Downloadable Activities for Children:

Children’s Activity Booklet:

Our education team has developed a Children’s Activity Bird Booklet that is free to download. This is an activity book that you can print and distribute to children and students. Most of the activities are designed for ages 5 and up, but there are a few advanced activities included in the booklet as well. Younger children might need help from an adult for reading instructions and spelling. Each activity lists the materials needed. Feel free to print and distribute along with the Bird Tracing Template - This is a separate document that goes along with one of the activities in the booklet called, Make Your Windows Bird Friendly.

Children’s Birding Field Guide:

Go out and find birds in northern Indiana with your little ones! Download and print this SBEAS Children’s Birding Field Guide which includes a summer and a winter field guide for the most common birds found in our region.

Other Educational Resources:

We are currently working a project to document the top 20 most common birds of our region, with an educational video on each one. This resource will help new birders learn what they are most likely to see when out in the field within our region. Learn more about this project here: Our Region’s Most Common Birds
